INTRODUCING: The Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept The World's Thinnest Mechanical Watch
There is no question a feat de triumph of mechanical watches is executing the design of a thin watch, but Piaget and a number of other fine watch brands have been competing for the modern title of thinnest watch for a number of years. 2020 marks the year Piaget accomplished this feat with the release of the Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept, now the world's thinnest mechanical timepiece at a staggering 2mm thick! To give us a non-metric reference, 2mm is the thickness of a U.S. Nickel.
The watch is so thin Piaget did not want to construct the 41mm case out of traditional material like gold, platinum or even stainless steel with the fear of the watch case actually bending and damaging the movement. Instead, they engineered a Cobalt metal alloy that would be more durable and corrosion resistant. The 2mm watch boasts an impressive 40-hour power reserve in its hand-wound movement.
The Altiplano Ultimate Concept was actually released back in 2018 at Salon Internation Haute Holorogerie as more of a concept of the idea that, "Hey we did this! Check it out..." and not originally offered for sale to the general collector community, but now in 2020, the watch is going to be sold as a regular production model.
Pricing on request, the watch is not officially a special numbered edition, but it will be delivered with limited production capacity and is tentatively scheduled for delivery in early Fall of 2020.
