A true antique Art Nouveau sterling silver on 18 karat yellow gold dragonfly pin blueish-green plique-a-jour wings and body set with antique-cut diamond accents set in torso and wings, with cabochon black onyx eyes. The beautiful bluish green hombre plique-a-jour, hand-crafted workmanship mimics the natural life-like dragonfly wings. Bringing even more life-like quality to this pin is the technique of “En Tremblant” wings – a French term – meaning “to tremble”. It was first used to describe 18th and 19th-century jewelry where parts of the diamond set pieces were attached to a trembler (a material that acts as a spring such as a thin metal wire) to create movement in the jewel when worn.
Shreve, Crump & Low Gemologist Notes: Plique-à-jour (French for “letting in daylight”) is a vitreous enameling technique where the enamel is applied in cells, but with no backing in the final product, so light can shine through the transparent or translucent enamel. It is in effect a miniature version of stained-glass. This hand-crafted method is considered very challenging technically: high time consumption (up to 4 months per item), with a high failure rate.
